I received a call this week from a trainer who was truly upset over losing yet another client. I don't know this person well so I started asking my typical series of questions.
1. Why did they leave you?
2. If you don't know the answer - why don't you know the answer?
3. Were you working on a full scale plan together to meet and exceed this client's goals?
4. When was the last time you reviewed those goals with your client?
5. Do you always conduct the same workout with your client?
6. How is your own personal trainer image? Are you living what you are preaching?
7. How often do you reward your clients with small victories?
8. How often do you thank your client for working with you?
9. What steps are you taking to stay ahead of the curve? What training are you in to continue on your path professionally?
These are just a few. This person was upset with me. They wanted to be upset with everyone but themselves. Its hard to look objectively at yourself but it is vital to do so in order to move forward and be the best that you can be in your field. You are your brand. You are your marketing manager, sales manager, accountant, business development executive and most of all - you are your client's motivator. If you aren't pushing your clients towards their goals and assisting them at achieving them - why would they stay with you?
Too many times I see trainers get comfortable with their clients and forget the basics. Be a professional. Motivate, encourage and don't be complacent. :)
Thanks for reading.
